OVERVIEW

The Fundamentals of Caribbean Labour Law & Employment Relations Course is a live online instructor-led course designed to familiarize participants with the various ways in which the legal systems of Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Belize, and Antigua and Barbuda directly impact business decision-making.

It explores the legal rights and duties of the management of labour and employment organizations, and provides a framework for understanding the growing body of labour and employment legislation which regulates employment practices and other administrative functions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES The aim of this course is to provide the student with an appreciation of the practical applications of labour legislation and current thinking in the field of labour, employment and administrative law sufficient to deal with a number of problems presented in the Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations field. Emphasis will be placed on the effective utilization of various resources available by way of cases and materials. Lectures, discussions, tutorial presentations, and case studies will be used throughout the course in order to enhance the student’s ability in the area of problem solving in this area of management. Identify, review and apply labour legislation guiding Business Operations a) Classify categories of labour legislation b) Identify and apply labour legislation to the management of daily business operations c) Identify and apply labour legislation to types of terminations 6. Describe existing gaps in the labour legislative landscape a) Articulate the vulnerabilities for both employees and employers based on non-existent legislation b) Critically examine the advantages and disadvantages of a voluntarist system
